Red Team and Deltek Team Up to Host Webinar on Proposal Review Best Practices

ASHBURN, Va., July 18, 2024 – Debi McGhee, General Manager of Capture at Red Team Consulting (Red Team), led a one-hour webinar on July 16 joined by almost 1,000 attendees. The webinar, co-hosted with Deltek, focused on proposal review best practices to ultimately help companies secure government contracts.

Carey Webster, Vice President of Research at Deltek, kicked off the event with a warm welcome, setting the stage for a session filled with valuable insights. Mrs. McGhee shared key strategies to enhance the proposal management process, emphasizing the importance of understanding that proposals are scored, not read.

Mrs. McGhee discussed a variety of tools and best practices for being an effective proposal reviewer, such as:

  • Make sure to conduct proposal reviews when there is sufficient content to present to the team. For example, if it’s for a pink team review, the content can be an annotated outline or slides that explain your approach.
  • Review comments should provide a good level of detail with suggestions on how to fix the comment.
  • Dont be afraid to bring in a new writer to help with recovery.
  • If reviewers disagree, bring it to an arbitrator like the program manager or capture manager.

She also provided some suggestions on how to ensure you have a winning proposal. For example,

  • Graphics are critical. The rule of thumb is to have a visual element on every page. Visual elements include a call out box, list, table, graphic, image, or flow chart. Make sure someone reviews graphics. Typos in graphics are credibility killers.
  • Make sure yoru proposal is written in a way that’s easy to read and score. It should be written at a 7th grade reading level (20 years ago it was a 9th grade reading level).
